“My Place in History” Genealogy Expo
The Senior Center at Frisco Square, 6670 Moore Street
9:00am-5:00pm
This is a FREE EVENT sponsored by the Frisco Public Library and the Heritage Association of Frisco.
Learn valuable facts, tips and insights from local and national experts and discover exciting resources for beginners and experts alike at this all-day event – the first of its kind in Frisco. Experienced genealogy researchers from local libraries and organizations such as the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) along with the University of North Texas will help new researchers get started, answer questions, and provide insights into utilizing the many high-quality genealogy resources available. A family research workshop will be conducted by research experts at the end of the day to help those who are new to America’s fastest growing hobby get started.
Included in the day’s topics will be a discussion on how to use the Freedmen’s Bureau Records for genealogical research, led by Ari Wilkins, an experienced researcher with Black Genesis and a library associate with the genealogy department at Dallas Public Library. These records include information on thousands of former slaves and impoverished whites from the South and the District of Columbia following the Civil War.
Between sessions, browse display tables including the “Take Time” Time Capsule & Memory Box Display presented by the Heritage Association. Look for tables from The Portal of North Texas, Preston Ridge Chapter –NSDAR, and various public libraries and genealogical organizations.
